Under Australian law, marriage can only be between a man and a woman which means that same sex couples cannot have a ‘legally recognised marriage'.

 

Having a Commitment Ceremony though, publicly and formally celebrates the relationship of a couple of the same sex and their commitment to each other.

 

A commitment ceremony will contain many of the same elements of a legal marriage and can be just as beautiful - the couple will make vows to each other, rings can be exchanged to symbolise their commitment, readings given by family members or friends, and the declarations of commitment made.

 

While a Marriage Certificate cannot be issued, your celebrant can prepare a certificate of commitment which will be signed by you and your celebrant and also, if you wish, by witnesses.
